Eco-Labels: Helpful, or Distracting?

Eco Labels via Chart Porn

I knew there were too many eco-related labels on food, furniture, buildings, textiles, etc., but I had no idea it had gone this far.   According to a 2009 survey, there are roughly 80 such standards in the US, and about 600 worldwide!

My questions for you are:

  1. Do you pay attention to these labels and change your buying habits accordingly?
  2. Which ones?
  3. Why (or why not)?

My suspicion is that “Organic,” “Energy Star,” and “Fair Trade” are pretty widely understood, but the rest are just background noise in the Vuvuzelic cacophony  of consumer goods advertising.

I swear, I’ll stop watching soccer while trying to come up with metaphors.  Really I will.
