Better Bottles by Design

Yes, they lack the shapely elegance of a faux-glass bottle, but this Coke bottle design prototype solves some important environmental issues.  They pack closer for shipping, stack on top of one another, use less material and choose plant based plastics over petroleum.  When you’re done drinking from the ergonomic offset spout, they collapse, making recycling a little easier.

The downside?  They don’t look like Coke bottles!  And in the end, it really comes down to how many bottles the beverage company can move off the shelves.  I’m sure marketing firms have tried to quantify the value of bottle shape in beverage sales, and I doubt that “boxy” wins the competition.

Still, this type of design change would be great for other products like bottled water or dish soap, where we don’t have 120 years of visual conditioning to prefer an hourglass figure on our soft drink bottles.  Calling Dr. Freud!
