Toast and a Hair-Do: Two Bits

Ever wonder how many sitcoms you can watch for a dime?  Well, wonder no more.

GE released an interactive tool to find out just how much energy common household appliances use, and you can slice and dice the data in a number of helpful ways.  Standard views like wattage or dollars consumed per year give you the the data you need to hunt down your DVR vampire or conserve a little hot water to save some significant cash.  But the real innovation here is in the ability to understand energy as an end use.

Click on the “What does 1 kilowatt hour yield for each appliance in terms of batches, loads, & meals?” tab to see how what you get for your kWh.  In my region, that’s a cost of about $0.09, and I can mix 300 bowls of batter, watch 29 movies on my DVD player, or pull 11 espresso shots.  That’s just shy of 30 cents for what many would consider a pretty lively Friday night.

Click around and find out how much your appliances are costing you.  Some appliances have an embedded calculator to show you how fast an energy-star upgrade would pay back.
