Nature, Numbers and Notes

Today, a couple of visualizations that will help you to look at the natural world in a new way.

Nature by Numbers

First up, Nature by Numbers, a 3D tour of the Fibonacci sequence,  golden ratio, Delaunay triangulation, and Voronoi tessellation as they appear in plants and animals.

Nature by Numbers from Cristóbal Vila on Vimeo.

I suppose these are the true ecometrics.

Almost better than the video is the Eterea Studios “about” page, where you can learn the meaning behind these mathematical constructs.

The Sound of the System

Next up is part visualization, part “auralization.”  Is that a word?

Imagine that each planet had a note that it played once every year.  What kind of music would the solar system make?

Whitevinyl Design answers that question with “SolarBeat.”

It’s fascinating to consider how many “Earth years” it takes for the other planets to make their rounds.  And I’ll admit to waiting long enough to hear the sweet, treble tone of New Year’s Day on Pluto.
