Death from Above: The Easter Bunny Massacre

I spent some time over the long Easter weekend catching up with a few projects around the house.  I changed the air filters, got the heat pump ready for the cooling season, and put up a hand railing in the stairs.

The railing was an important addition, because right now my stairs are dark and difficult to navigate.  Why?  I’m glad you asked.

See, last year when I was air-sealing and insulating my attic, I replaced all the recessed lighting fixtures with a model that would safely come into contact with the insulation.  If the bulb heats up too much, the power shuts off.  Above the stairs, I borrowed a ladder and replaced the incandescent spot light with a CFL, expecting it to stay cooler and last longer than an ordinary bulb.

As you’ve already guessed, it burned out well before the other incandescent bulbs, and I’m mad.  Did I get a cheap bulb, or do others have this problem?  I’ve always heard CFLs last longer, but that has not been my experience.

Time for an LED I guess.  And just in time for Easter!

LEDs are cooler, use less energy, and last a LONG time. And I’m willing to pay extra if I don’t have to climb up a ladder set on the stairs to change the light bulb!

We’ve all heard that CFL’s last longer, but from what I’ve read there are conditions associated with that claim. The one that worries me, and which may apply here, is that they must remain lit for at least 15 minutes. If you cycle them on and off quickly, they fail quickly. Maybe LED is the way to go, if the up front cost doesn’t scare you.
