Where did I go wrong?

I don’t know many other people who get excited about receiving their utility bills, but this month I couldn’t even wait for the email reminder from the power company.  I preemptively checked their website to see if I had saved some energy.

For those of you keeping track, I added piles of pink insulation to the attic over the summer, began monitoring my energy in real-time with a TED 5000, relentlessly tracked and sealed air leaks around windows and doors, and even installed a new thermostat that would take better control of my heat pump’s auxiliary power.  The result?

Bupkiss.

Oh, the time series graph looks good, with a $20 savings over last November, but that can all be explained by the warmer temperature this year.  Four degrees warmer, twenty dollars saved.  I guess I should be happy for warm weather, and my wife has commented several times about how much more comfortable the house feels now that we’re not allowing all the heat to escape through the roof, but I want to know: what happened to my energy savings?

We know your pain. We’ve replaced most of the major energy consumers with Energy Star rated versions only to see the rate of consumption stay the same.
