Energy InfoVis: Oil and the Grid

Two interactive data visualizations for you today that have been making their way around the InfoVis blogs recently.

The first is an exploration of global oil reserves from The Economist.

Apparently, we have 40 years worth of reserves at the current rate of consumption.  They don’t mention that there are a couple of billion people in Asia that would like to live the Western oil-intensive lifestyle.  I’d probably still work on some energy alternatives if I were them.

The second visualization from NPR lets you delve into the sometimes scary world of our nation’s electrical grid.  You can even drill down to individual power plants and find out how electricity in your region is generated.
